Shani Pradosh (August 19/2017)
Pradosh is dedicated to Lord Shiva and goddess Parvati. It is observed twice in the lunar month as per the Hindu calendar. A fast is observed on Trayodashi, 13th day of Krishna Paksha and Shukla Paksha. It is open to any age and any gender. This day is auspicious because it celebrates the togetherness of Lord Shiva and his consort Parvati. Together they are extremely delighted, pleased and generous. Some people worship Nataraja the Lord of the divine dance (Shiva Thandava). A fast may be observed for 24 hours or from sunrise to sunset. Pradosh is observed in twilight. This time before sunrise or sunset is considered auspicious. Lord Shani is considered to be the task master of Karma. The Matsya Purana describes him as a dark complexioned deity who walks with a Danda (his weapon) in one hand and a Rudraksha mala in the other hand. He can severely punish for bad karmas but also bless abundantly for good karmas according to texts. Shani Pradosh is very auspicious day to wear a Rudraksha and worship Lord Shiva. Mahadev was the deity who had assigned the task of keeping karmic records to the planet Saturn and meeting out fruits of labor accordingly. The 7 mukhi Rudraksha is ruled by goddess Mahalaxmi and it pacifies the malefic effects of Saturn as per ancient texts. This Rudraksha should be worn by those suffering from miseries pertaining to body, finance and mental set up. Thus Shani pradosh is a good day to wear the seven mukhi and practice charity also.
Prayers and puja are observed during this time. The Shivling is worshipped with Bilva leaves, milk, curd, and ghee. Devotees also listen to Pradosh Katha. The Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra, Lagu Rudram, Shiva Tandava Stotram or just a simple Shiva mantra can be chanted during this time. Water from Kalasha and sacred ash are given to devotees.
