Vinayak Chaturthi (June 27th)
Lord Ganesha is popularly known as Vignaharta (remover of obstacles). Iconography shows him as an elephant headed god with four hands and riding a mouse. In ancient India when traders had to travel to various geographic locations they often prayed to lord Ganesha to remove obstacles. As per ancient texts he was the deity in the Hindu pantheon who was assigned the task of ensuring obstacle free new beginnings for his devotees. His ritual worship generated positive results and people traveling to Asia, Nepal and Sri Lanka started establishing his idols there too. His worship or powers were no longer restricted to only one particular community or geographic location. Ganesha the bestower of Riddhi and Siddhi now became a favorite in households, entrances of temples, in cave carvings, sculptures and paintings.
Vinayak Chaturthi is the day considered auspicious for seeking the blessings of lord Ganesha. This day is observed every month on the fourth day of waxing or waning moon. On this day people rise early, bathe, worship lord Ganesha with dhruva, red hibiscus flowers, haldi , kumkum , chandan , akshada, dhoop and modak. Some people observe fasting, chanting auspicious mantras, recite vrat kathas and visit the temple to sight his auspicious form. Human life is blessed when it shows signs of peace, happiness, progress and success. Sometimes delays in education, job, marriage, progeny and property can cause frustration. For people who seek to do away with this aspect, worship of lord Ganesha on this day is considered very fruitful as per shastraas.
Maharashtra is the abode of the Asthta Vinayak (eight Vinayak) shrines. Nature also supports this by ensuring the existence of the natural eight mukhi Rudraksha. Rudraksha are sacred seeds that were generated from the eyes of lord Shiva as per texts. They are multifaceted and exist from 1 to 21 mukhis in nature. The eight mukhi Rudraksha was assigned to lord Ganesha by lord Shiva himself. In today’s time where the rush of modern life does not allow an individual to participate in lengthy rituals as prescribed in shastraas the easiest option would be to wear an energized 8 mukhi Rudraksha on Vinayak Chaturthi. The powers of this sacred seed have been mentioned time and again in shastraas. The eight mukhi Rudraksha removes all obstacles and brings success in all undertakings. The mind set of opponents are changed and malefics of Rahu are nullified as per texts.
